Quantum yield for photon emission

Using (18.1) and integrating from / = 0 to infinity yields the quantum yield for photon emission... 

In the case of fluorescence detection, the quantum yield for photon emission per absorption event should clearly be high, as close to unity as possible. Extreme care should be taken to minimize scattering backgrounds which may arise either from Rayleigh scattering, or from Raman scattering from the sample and the substrate.
