Purposes of collecting and analysing near miss data

PURPOSES OF COLLECTING AND ANALYSING NEAR MISS DATA 

Three general classes of such purposes may be distinguished  

to gain qualitative insight into how (small) failures or errors develop into near misses  

to arrive at a statistically reliable quantitative insight into the occurrence of factors or combinations of factors giving rise to incidents  

to maintain a certain level of alertness to danger, especially when the rates of actual injuries and other accidents are already low within an organisation.
