Pump shaft packing

Coatings for pump shafts, packing sleeves, and feed screws for the chemical industry. 

Exposure in a solution that is passivating and yet not far removed from the passive-activity boundary may lead to coiTosion if the exposure involves a strong abrasive condition as well. Pitting of pump shafts under packing handling sea water is an example of this abrasive effect. 

The standards are important because they allow the dimensional interchangeability of pumps and shaft packing of different manufacturers, but only as long as the manufacturers conform to the standard.

As the pump shaft rotates, the shaft packing rotates with it due to friction. (In more complex mechanical seals, the shaft-packing element is secured to the rotating shaft by Allen screws.) There is also friction between the spring.

The VOC emissions occur from leaks around from valve stems, pump shafts, worn packings, and pipe joints. Fugitive VOC emissions can be minimized with proper design and specifying seal-less pumps and valves, and with good preventive maintenance.
