The most famous exercise in this respect was to be Thomas Edwards Gangraem or a catalogue and discovery of many of the errors, heresies, blasphemies and pernicious practices of the Sectaries, which was published in three parts in 1646, beginning in February. But there were already other books attacking Independents and Sectaries, by authors like William Prynne and John Bastwick (puritan martyrs who had had their ears clipped in 1639 by the bishops) and by Robert Baillie, a Scots commissioner in London. [Pg.26]
