Physicist Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius was born January 2, 1822, in Koeslin, Pomerania, Prussian province (now Koszalin, Poland). In that case, protests caused delays that contributed to large cost overruns. But Seabrook was an exception most nuclear utilities got into financial trouble with little help from protesters. Although oil prices rose dramatically in the 1970s—a spur to nuclear development—the stagflation of the times drove down demand for electricity from 7 percent to 2 percent per annum and drove up interest rates into the double digits. Between 1971 and 1978, nuclear capital costs rose 142 percent, making them more expensive to build per kilowatt-hour of capacity than new fossil fuel plants. 

The plant engineer should strive to make sure that, whenever possible, his purchase orders specify compliance with the correct standard. Many manufacturers can tmthfully claim that their specifications exceed the minimum requirements of a material standard, in which case they will have no objection to its inclusion in the order. Those who protest too much that its requirements are superfluous may deserve further scmtiny. Choosing the correct specification is not always easy, and requires expertise in the relevant field. This expertise is available from consulting engineers or from an inspection authority, who will also appraise the vendor s designs and, if required, will witness critical stages of constmction and test. 

This was a claim that I and several other authors criticized in a number of journals, but unfortunately not in Nature magazine.11 Although the authors of the Orbitals Observed study protested their innocence, it became clear that their claims had been incorrect and exaggerated.12 In a section of the same paper, I discussed the notion that the 4s atomic orbital is occupied before the 3d orbitals. This has subsequently turned out to be incorrect and there is conclusive spectroscopic evidence to the contrary which seemed to have escaped the attention of several authors who have written on this issue, including myself.13... 

In this book, the classification of ostracods by Muller is used the genus names by the Poulsen classification are cited in parentheses only when appropriate. The author protests against the irresponsible shuffling of scientific names, and hopes for the revival of the Muller classification. In addition, the author believes that Cypridina luciferin is the proper name of this substance that is not necessarily bound to the genus name. 

Petiot was also asked to rename the drink to appease delicate sensibilities. He called it the Red Snapper, which is how the hotel s King Cole Bar still presents it. The original Mary, depending on which wild goose you chase, was (1) Mary, Queen of Scots, who died in a bucket of blood (2) Mary Tudor, who thirsted for Protestant blood (3) a patron at the Bucket of Blood Club in Chicago or (4) a woman who was repeatedly stood up at Mr. Petiot s bar in Paris, which is, as tire English would say, pretty bloody. 

Some Paracelsian alchemists, especially Heinrich Khun rath (ca. 1560-1605) and Stefan Michelspacher (active ca. 1615-23), were objects of persecution on the part of hoth Lutheran and Catholic authorities. Khunrath was an alchemist from Saxony, the heartland of the Reformation, but his theological stance was characteristic of the second generation of Protestants who felt that Luther s work had been left incomplete and that another religious reform was essential. In Khunrath s ideas this would take the form of a Lutheranism that could accommodate an autonomous personal piety. To express their Lutheran piety intellectually the alchemists employed the terms of Paracelsian theosophy, while they found an emotive outlet in the mystical experience of the power and grace of the Holy Spirit. They felt themselves to be inspired (literally breathed ) by the Spirit, a force that they identified with alchemical pneuma. Khunrath called himself an enthusiast, hlled with the presence of the divine. 

One important reason for the emergence of Paracelsian alchemical illustration may have been its function as a psychological compensation for the rejection of Catholic imagery by the Protestants and the resulting spiritual and emotional insecurity experienced by many of the faithful. It is not merely coincidental that Paracelsian iconography should appear in Protestant areas where traditional Catholic icons had been destroyed. (The development of a specihcally Catholic interest in alchemy, however, was a phenomenon of the mid-seventeenth century developed in the work of Athanasius Kircher and other Jesuits.) ...

Khunrath s engraving of Christ-Anthropos, the Archetype of the universe (fig. 3), initiated many of the elements later found in Fludd s prolific illustrations of the Macrocosmic Man. These included the use of the male nude, kabbalistic inscriptions, geographical compass-points, the diagrammatic structure of the Macrocosm and the motif of the dove of the Holy Spirit. The apocalyptic context of these images and their role in the Protestant Reformation of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries will be considered in the following chapter.
