Protein Rectangular phase

Clearly the solubility of the substance in the mobile phase is very important, for if it is too soluble it moves with the solvent front and if insoluble, it remains at the point of application. The subtle use of mixed solvents, where one solvent is more closely associated than another with the solute, has been exploited for achieving improved separations (147,201). Two-way chromatography on rectangular sheets of filter paper by irrigation in one direction with one solvent followed by transverse irrigation with another solvent is advantageous when a single excursion does not completely separate a mixture such as a protein hydrolysate (71,78). [Pg.206]
