Prospects for Practical Utilization of Bioelectrocatalysis

The theory of bioelectrocatalysis is only making its initial progress however, in the field of practical application we can already point out two areas in which the use of biocatalysts is likely to yield essentially new results. 

The high specificity of enzymes permits us to develop enzymic electrodes for electrochemical sensors needed for environment and medico-biological applications. 

Application of biocatalysts, above all mediatorless types, in electrochemical energetics.

Sensors using the principle of acceleration of electrochemical reactions by enzymes have been developed for determination of more than 30 different compounds and their number is continuously increasing. Some of them are commercially manufactured and find application in clinical practice.
