Propionyl CoA. catabolism

Threonine can be broken down by tw o separate pathways. Serine dehydratase catalyzes the conv ersion of threonine to 2-ketobutyrate plus an ammonium ion 2-ketobutyrate is then converted by branched-chaln keto acid (BCKA) dehydrogenase to propionyl-CoA plus carbon dioxide. Propionyl-CoA catabolism is described later in this chapter. Threonine can also be broken down by a complex that has been suggested to be composed of threonine dehydrogerraseand acetoacetone synthase (Tressel ef al., 1986). Here, threonine catabolism results in the production of acetyl CoA plus glycure. 

The retention time (18.4 min) of the additional peak appearing at last was identical with that of the reference standard acetyl-CoA. The retention times of the two other additional peaks were identical with those of acrylyl-CoA (33.2 min) and 3-hydroxypropionyl-CoA (20.6 min), intermediates of the propionyl-CoA catabolism by the proposed modified (5-oxidation pathway. Since both, acrylyl-CoA and 3-hydroxypropionyl-CoA were not available commercially reference standards have been prepared... 

Malonyl-CoA as a possible intermediate of the proposed propionyl-CoA catabolism (6.7) was not detected unequivocally on the HPLC elution profiles.
