Property-Function Relationship

One of the most studied aspects of catalysis science is the relationship between structure and function. Some general themes are weU estabUshed by now, but specific connections between catalyst characteristics and performance attributes remain elusive in most cases. The crystalline geometry of zeolites makes them relatively more amenable to study by a variety of powerful modern characterization tools, but there remain many key unanswered questions in the catalytic application 

MOR and MFl infrared spectra are not nearly as complex as those of Y zeolites. Single bands around 3620 and 3605 cm , respectively, are typical for the acid forms of these framework types. The lower energy of these bands compared to those of zeolite Y is usually cited in explaining their higher intrinsic acidity and

The synthetic developments made in the past few years in the field of metal oxide nanoparticles are allowing us to prepare materials which not only have exotic structures, but we now also have much greater control over resulting particle shape and size. While this review is not an exhaustive list of the achievements made in this field, it demonstrates the huge advancements made in innovative approaches and low-temperature synthetic design. These apply not only to binary metal oxides, but also to more complex nanoparticle systems and composites. Hand-in-hand with synthetic developments has been advances in characterisation of nanostmetures, which are providing us with mueh-needed insight into the stmeture-property-function relationships in these materials.
