Properties of LC polythiophene derivatives

The chemical, optical and thermal properties of the LC polythiophene derivatives PCBT and PPCHT are given in Table 12.1. These polymers were fusible and soluble in ordinary organic solvents such as 

The conductivities parallel to the rubbing direction (a//) increased by 5-15-fold compared with those of random orientation and the ratios of parallel to perpendicular conductivities ( z///ax) were 4-100. Here it is worth emphasizing that the present LC polythiophene derivatives show fiuorescence in the range 530-540 nm. This suggests that they might be useful for novel luminescent materials with optical anisotropy when they are macroscopically aligned.
