Properties and Novel Aerogel Materials

The chemical properties of Si02-X aerogels have been studied extensively. These studies fall into several categories. One involves chemistry of metallic species, while another is directed toward the interaction of aerogel particles with the external environment. 

Three types of reaction chemistry involving metal ions in Si02-X-M aerogels will be discussed. The first involves the formation of iron-containing species and their resultant magnetic properties. The second concerns the chemical reactions of metal ions, such as Rh(in) and Ru(III), with external reactants, and the third has to do with photochemistry and nanochemistry of Au particles.
