Carbonyl monomers can be polymerized by acidic initiators, although their reactivity is lower than in anionic polymerization. Protonic acids such as hydrochloric and acetic acids and Lewis acids of the metal halide type are effective in initiating the cationic polymerization of carbonyl monomers.
