In 1887 a committee was appointed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to consider the question of securing uniformity in the spelling and pronunciation of chemical terms. The work of this committee extended through the four following years. As a result of widespread correspondence and detailed discussion at the annual meetings of the Chemical Section of the American Association the following rules have been formulated and adopted by the Association.
