Principle of Electro-Osmosis

FIGURE 10,14, Principle of electro-osmosis. The local force acting on the liquid (produced by an electric field E acting on a charge density p) creates a flow, [Pg.283]

Under the influence of a tangential electric field E, these ions start moving and.induce within the water film a plug flow with a velocity given by [Pg.283]

We consider here evaporated electrodes separated by a distance of - 100 im and subjected to a potential difference of 1 V. It follows that the electric field is 100 V/cm. With typical values of of 100 mV, we get V 0.5 mm/s. In other words, water moves by one unit (100 Llm) in 0.2 s. Two possible applications are worth mentioning  [Pg.283]
