Preservation additives selection

In a symmetric top molecule such as NH3, if the transition dipole lies along the molecule s symmetry axis, only k = 0 contributes. Such vibrations preserve the molecule s symmetry relative to this symmetry axis (e.g. the totally symmetric N-H stretching mode in NH3). The additional selection rule AK = 0... 

Some compounded preparations are naturally preserved, as in the case of certain syrups and elixirs others require the addition of a preservative. Preservatives are commonly added to products to minimize microbial growth, as in the case of oral liquids, topicals, and multi-dose parenterals. A preservative is selected based upon its characteristics, including concentration, pH, taste, odor, and solubility. 

Preservative-free Duramorph (morphine sulfate injection, USP) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isobaric solution of morphine sulfate, free of antioxidants, preservatives or other potentially neurotoxic additives. Selective blockade of pain sensation is possible by neuraxial application of morphine and duration of analgesia may be much longer by this route compared to systemic administration. 

Nonnutrient Additives. Nonnutritional dietary additives provide antioxidants to preserve freshness, flavor enhancers to stimulate food selection, color to meet the owner s expectations, pellet biaders to minimi2e fine particles, mycostats to minimi2e mold growth, and iagredient-flow enhancers. Pet foods do not iaclude coccidiostats, antibiotics, added hormonal materials, and fly-larval iasecticides used ia other animal feeds. 

The reaction of the iV-acetylenanime with perbenzoic acid at low temperature is much faster than attack at a A -double bond, so the latter can be preserved without prior protection. In addition, the A-acetyl compound is relatively stable to weak alkali and to Oppenauer conditions permitting, e.g., hydrolysis of a 3-acetate group and conversion to a 3-keto-A" function. These latter compounds also react selectively with perbenzoic acid at the A -double bond.
