Preparation of Phase Diagrams

DSC and low angle X-ray scattering have been used to prepare phase diagrams of polyethylene oxide and PS [109]. DSC can be used to prepare phase diagrams and this is illustrated by work on a binary blend of PS and tetramethyl bisphenol-A-PC. 

A phase diagram of a binary polymer blend can be derived from the Tg of the demixed phases under the following conditions

Attachment of a hot or cold stage to the ordinary microscope stage allows the specimen to be observed while the temperature is changed slowly, rapidly, or held constant somewhere other than ambient. This technique is used to determine melting and freezing points, but is especially useful for the study of polymorphs, the determination of eutectics, and the preparation of phase diagrams. 

Differential scanning calorimetry (Chapter 7) has been used in crystallinity studies, determination of transition temperatures, curing studies and preparation of phase diagrams. Differential thermal analysis (Chapter 6) has also been applied to transition studies, phase changes, curing studies, degradation studies and crystallinity.
