Preparation of hydroxyorganosilanes

There are several techniques for obtaining hydroxyorganosilanes. These techniques generally amount to the hydrolysis of halogen-, alkoxy-, acy-loxy-, amino- and hydride substituted organosilanes with water, as well as aqueous solutions of soda or alkali. The hydrolysis proceeds thus  

Apart from the given common technique, one can prepare hydroxyorganosilanes by the breakdown of the organochlorosilane mixture (with an aqueous alkali solution) obtained by the organomagnesium synthesis  

However, in this case a mixture of mono-, di- and trihydroxyorganosi-lanes, which is difficult to separate, is formed. 

With the help of organomagnesium substances it is possible to obtain hydroxyorganosilanes from a,co-dihydroxydiorganosiloxancs  

In this case the Grignard agent serves as a reactant and an agent that breaks the Si—O—Si bonds.
