Pre-lab 8.1 On the Synthesis of

Procedure 8.1 Synthesis of Tris(1,10-Phenanthroline)Chromium(lll) Hexafluorophosphate, [Cr(phen)3] (PF6)33,4 

All manipulations must be carried out in the dark (use aluminum foil on reaction flasks as indicated) and in the hood. 

Combine the two solutions in a 100 ml round-bottom flask wrapped in foil and containing a magnetic stir bar. Silver chloride will precipitate from the resulting green-blue solution. 

While the above mixture is stirring, dissolve 1.620 g of solid 1,10-phenanthroline (9.00 mmol) in 30 ml dd H20 with mild heating. Before the temperature reaches 50 °C add 1.5 ml of 3 m HC1. When the temperature reaches 50 °C add about four to five more drops of HC1 or until the solid is fully dissolved. 

Vacuum filter the AgCl suspension and return the bright blue filtrate to the foil-wrapped round-bottom flask.
