Other possible mechanisms for formation of the enediol are those involving either a simultaneous attack by HA and A (on the aldoses or the ketose) or an initial attack by HA, instead of A . 

The formation of the ring-substituted products XIV during solvolysis of IV provides a unique probe of the reaction mechanisms in this case, as both the reactant and product are chiral. A possible mechanism for formation of the product could involve solvent attack at the relatively unhindered 10-position of IV or on a chiral ion pair with a stereoelectronic preference for addition either syn or anti to the leaving group, analogous to proposals for the Sn2 mechanism (42). However the products XIV from optically active IV were completely racemic, ruling out the operation of such a process.

Thermal decomposition of the [diene]-Fe(CO)j complex (35) (Equation (2)), leads to 2-ethoxycarbonylaminopyridine (36) in addition to some loss of the ethoxycarbonyl group <86H(24)l4ll>. A thermal electrocyclic rearrangement of [106,1 Ocjdiazapyraceheptylene (37) has also been proposed as one component in a possible mechanism for formation of the unusual bridged [14]annulene (38) (Equation (3)) <85TL5429>. 

Possible mechanisms for formation of the functionalized polymer products are shown in Scheme 4. Because of both electron transfer mechanisms, Cannizzaro reactions and oligomerization, the functionalization of PSLi with formaldehyde produces a complex mixture of products and is not a useful reaction.
