Porosity is defined as the fraction p of the total volume of the sample VPS that is attributed to the pores Vpores, detected by the method used  

Porosity relates to the ratio of the pore diameter d and the pore wall thickness w, but it contains no information about the absolute dimensions of the porous 

The porosity is usually determined gravimetrically. The density of the porous layer pPS is defined as the ratio of the PS mass mPS and the PS volume VPS. 

The porosity p is obtained if the porous layer density pPS is normalized on the silicon bulk density psi.
