Many engineering thermoplastics (e.g., polysulfone, polycarbonate, etc.) have limited utility in applications that require exposure to chemical environments. Environmental stress cracking [13] occurs when a stressed polymer is exposed to solvents. Poly(aryl ether phenylquin-oxalines) [27] and poly(aryl ether benzoxazoles) [60] show poor resistance to environmental stress cracking in the presence of acetone, chloroform, etc. This is expected because these structures are amorphous, and there is no crystallinity or liquid crystalline type structure to give solvent resistance. Thus, these materials may have limited utility in processes or applications that require multiple solvent coatings or exposures, whereas acetylene terminated polyaryl ethers [13] exhibit excellent processability, high adhesive properties, and good resistance to hydraulic fluid. 

Another example is concerned with epoxy adhesives. Epoxies are best, but an alloy such as epoxy-phenolic or epoxy-polysulfone may offer improved peeling... 

Adhesives have been classified according to their applications. Epoxy is a compatible adhesive for stainless steel and ceramics, as used in the piezoelectric motor industry. Epoxy adhesives of different characteristics are found. Epoxy-polysulfone and epoxy-phenolics both exhibit thermosetting properties, providing stronger bonding properties with ceramics. 

Polysulfone A number of adhesives have been found useful for joining polysufone to itself or to other materials. These include 3M Company s EC 880 solvent-base adhesive, EC 2216 room-temperaturecuring epoxy two-part paste, Bloomingdale Division, American Cyana-mid Company BR-92 modified epoxy with DICY curing agent, or curing agent "Z" (both spreadable pastes), vinyl-phenolics, epoxy-nylons, epoxies, polyimide, rubber-based adhesives, styrene polyesters, resorcinol-formaldehyde, polyurethanes, and cyanoacrylates. The EC 880, EC 2216, and the two BR-92 adhesives are recommended by the polysulfone manufacturer. Union Carbide (16) (17).

Polyacetal polyphenylene oxide are widely used as engineering thermoplastics, and epoxy resins are used in adhesive and casting application. The main uses of poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(propylene oxide) are as macroglycols in the production of polyurethanes. Polysulfone is one of the high-temperature-resistant engineering plastics.
