Polysaccharides associated with cellulose

Polglase, W. J., Polysaccharides Associated with Wood Cellulose, X, 283-333... [Pg.458]

Hemicelluloses and Related Polysaccharides. Hemicelluloses [9034-32-6] are a large group of polysaccharides that are associated with cellulose in the primary and secondary cell walls of all higher plants, but otherwise have no relationship to cellulose (2). They are also present in some other plants. [Pg.484]

Pectic polysaccharides are classified as those polymers composed mainly of galactosyluronic residues, together with covalently or nonco-valently bound, neutral fractions. Hemicelluloses are polymers that are probably covalently linked to pectin, and noncovalently associated with cellulose it has been proposed that they are capable of strong hydrogen-... [Pg.274]

The term hemicellulose is applied to those plant cell-wall polysaccharides which occur in close association with cellulose, especially in lignified tis-... [Pg.429]

Closely associated with cellulose in the wood structure and paper products are other polysaccharides called hemicelluloses, which often have been labeled as the matrix material of wood. In hardwoods the primary hemi-cellulose is a xylan (polymer of xylose), whereas in softwoods the primary hemi-cellulose is a glucomannan, although both of these polysaccharides occur to some extent in both types of wood. The DP of the hemicelluloses is much less than that of cellulose, in the range of 100-200. [Pg.1238]
