Since the synthetic strategies for the preparation of poly[2]catenanes have been developed only very recently [101-106,113], their properties are just beginning to be investigated. By contrast, the properties of pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyro-taxanes have been studied extensively and are understood in some considerable detail already. Indeed, it has been established that solubilities, phase transition behavior, hydrodynamic volumes, and the intrinsic viscosities of pseudopolyrotaxanes and polyrotaxanes are significantly different from those of their separate components. Solubilities can either be depressed or enhanced as a result of interlocking. For example, poly(ethylene glycol) and a-CD are soluble [147-159] in H2O.
