Polymer chemistry Staudinger

Hermann Staudinger (1881-1963). German chemist. One of the pioneers in polymer chemistry. Staudinger was awarded the Nobel Prize in Qiemistry in 1953. [Pg.1062]

One might object to the term coordination polymer on the grounds that these compounds do not share the usual plastic characteristics of, for example, polyethylene. ITowever, they do have this in common with biopolymers as DNA and RNA. In fact, the first use of the term coordination polymer predates present day polymer chemistry (Staudinger in the 1920 s [39]) by almost a decade, [40] and it has been in use since the 1950 s, [41] see Figure 1.4, although in some of the early occurrences it is used for metal ions coordinated to polymers [42]. [Pg.10]

Despite his laboratory s outward calm, Carothers was poised on the brink of an almost superhuman outpouring of scientific achievement. Over the next three years, between 1929 and 1931, he would transform the chaos of organic polymer chemistry with a clarity of focus and definition. He would settle the argument between Staudinger and the rest of Europe s chemists. As a leading polymer scientist later commented, Carothers work was a volcanic eruption, the reverberations of which are still being felt. ... [Pg.127]

Staudinger, Hermann. (1881-1965). A German chemist, winner of a Nobel Prize in 1953 for his pioneer work on the structure of macromolecules and polymerization. A large part of modem high-polymer chemistry is based on his original research. [Pg.1175]
