Automobile carpets are often made with a polyethylene rather than a latex backing because the polyethylene-backed carpet can be heat-formed so that the carpet will fit the shape of the car floor and cutting and sewing operations are consequently eliminated. [Pg.238]

Lower-density E-plastomers have found alternate use in cast film processes to make elastic film laminates with good breathability which contain laminates of liquid impermeable extensible polymeric films with extensible-thermoplastic-polymer-fiber nonwovens and nonwoven webs of polyethylene-elastomer fibers as the intermediate layers. The development relates to a breathable film including an E-plastomer and filler that contributes to pore formation after fabrication and distension of the film. The method and extent of distension is designed to produce a breathable film by stretching the film to form micropores by separation of the film of the E-plastomer from the particulate solids. This film is useful for manufacture of absorbent personal-care articles, such as disposable diapers and sanitary napkins and medical garments. In detail, these constructions comprise a liquid impermeable extensible film comprising polyolefins. The nitrile rubber latex, cement dipped nitrile rubber, polyethylene (medium density), and surgical rubber latex were all penetrated by 1,2-dichloroethane in less than 3 min and would be of little use in situations requiring the garment to be in constant contact with 1,2-dichloroethane. It is mainly used in the garment industry with or without natural cotton and has trade names such as Terylene , Dacron , etc. As the name indicates, it is a polymer between terephthalic acid (PT) and ethylene glycol. Both terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) can be used to make the polymer. A majority of the modem plants tend to use PT as the starting material because of the availability of high-purity PT on a large scale. Both PT and DMT are first converted to bis(hydroxy ethyl) terephthalate 8.17 (see reaction 8.26). For PT this is effected by a straightforward esterification reaction. For DMT a transesterification reaction catalyzed by zinc and manganese acetate is used. [Pg.182]

Degradable Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Films. Typical xenon arc embrittlement times for unstabilized low-density polyethylene are l600-2UOO hrs. The controls chosen for this research are listed in Table II the thin LDPE garment bag embrittled in 1820 hr and the EcoPlastics LDPE control became brittle after 2075 hr xenon irradiation. The thin garment bag was not brittle, as determined by a fold test, after 18 months outdoor exposure. The Dupont "Sclair" LDPE control listed in Table II was unusual since it had short embrittlement times of 1175 hr in the Weather-Ometer and 6.5 months outdoors. This film was used as a yardstick to measure the Degradable LDPE films since a Degradable Plastic should not last more than 6 months, perhaps less, outdoors and 1200 hr in the xenon arc Weather-Ometer. [Pg.314]
