When projectile ions are prepared by electron bombardment internal excitation generally occurs. In monoatomic ions one has to deal only with electronic excitation, however, in polyatomic ions one is faced with a more difficult problem since rotational and vibrational excitation are also present and may be more difficult to eliminate or to take into account. In the past this complication has either been neglected or a rationale was established that the distribution of internal energy had a negligible influence on the final conclusion reached. In more recent times some attention has been given to this problem and some success realized in preparing monoatomic projectile ions in either the ground electronic state or in a known mixture of a few electronic states. [Pg.191]

Soft landing Finally, soft landing of polyatomic ions into self-assembled monolayers can be achieved using appropriate projectile ions with low ion kinetic... [Pg.1126]
