In another study of this type, a polyrotaxane incorporating a phenanthroline/thio-phene-based conjugated backbone was synthesised via a copper(I) template reaction, followed by electropolymerisation. After removal of the copper(I), re-metallation was only found to be possible if lithium ion had been present during the original copper decomplexation reaction.
