Poly high heat crystal polymer

As mentioned earlier, poly(thioformaldehyde) is a highly crystalline polymer, and it has been shown to have a hexagonal crystal structure (14, 24). Thus, poly-(thioformaldehyde) obtained by irradiation of trithiane followed by heating has a hexagonal unit cell with a = 5.07 A and c=36.52 A crossed by one helical chain parallel to the c axis. The chain has an identity period of 36.52 A that comprises 17 —CH2S— units in 9 turns of the helix (14). Poly(thioformaldehyde) made by other methods crystallizes similarly (24). [Pg.79]

In Fig. 16 the heat-treated sampie(l) is obtained by heating poly-DSP crystals (a) up to 330°C at a scanning speed of 15°C/min. Then, the sample is cooled immediately to room temperature. The intrinsic viscosity of the original as-polymerized poly-DSP (2.1-2.9) is reduced (0.55-0.59) in sample (1). An X-ray pattern of sample (1) shows slight but definite differences when compared to that erf the original as-polymerized polymer and, in addition, the pattern agrees exactly with that ot the medium-sized polymer crystals (c), which are obtained by photopolymerization of DSP crystals upon irradiation with a xenon lamp for 50 min. Poly(sulfazene) forms single crystals, that is, bundles of highly oriented fibers. The polymer behaves as a metal with respect to reflection, specific heat capacity, electrical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility. The specific resistance is about 0.001 H cm at room temperature. The polymer is superconducting at 0.26 K. [Pg.613]
