The effect of concentration of base employed in the polyesterification was also studied. Variation of the amount of trlethylamine introduced into the reaction shows that there is no effect of excess base on the polymer yield as seen in Figure 2. Where no external base was used, 2 % polymer was still formed, presumably aided by the participation of PIE as a tertiary base. Korshak et.al. have noted similar independence of polymer yields from base concentrations in the formation of poly(hexamethylene terephthalate), though in their case the yields were much lower.39 The molecular weights of the polymers formed were found to be minimally affected by the trlethylamine concentration (Figure 3) S lid not as dramatic as in the case of hexamethylene diol. 

The crystal structure of hexamethylene glycol dibenzoate has been determined (28) in order to extend this methodology to poly (hexamethylene terephthalate) = 6GT. So far, it has been possible to confirm that the hexamethylene section of 6GT has the fully extended planar zig-zag conformation.
