Polarized light pleochroism

The analyzer is removed and the color of the sample is observed in plane-polarized light. If the sample is colored, the stage is rotated. Colored, anisotropic materials may show pleochroism—a change in color or hue when the orientation with respect to the vibration direction of the polarizer is changed. Any pleochroism should be noted and recorded. [Pg.65]

Pleochroism is the property of a non-cubic crystal whereby certain wavelengths of polarized light are absorbed in different amounts in different crystallographic directions. Such differential absorption may produce different... [Pg.106]

If the microstructure is too fine, and the material is pleochroic, one can attempt to identify the azimuths for maximum and minimum absorption of linearly polarized light (171 in optically biaxial material, these need not coincide with the local extinction directions. The use of optical pleochroism as just described is one example of how studies limited to observations between crossed polars do not exhaust the information available from light microscopy. [Pg.248]
