Pocks

Hydrocarbons are of a lower density than formation water. Thus, if no mechanism is in place to stop their upward migration they will eventually seep to the surface. On seabed surveys in some offshore areas we can detect crater like features ( pock marks ) which also bear witness to the escape of oil and gas to the surface. It is assumed that throughout the geologic past vast quantities of hydrocarbons have been lost in this manner from sedimentary basins. 

Since the first formulation of the MO-LCAO finite basis approach to molecular Ilartree-Pock calculations, computer applications of the method have conventionally been implemented as a two-step process. In the first of these steps a (large) number of integrals — mostly two-electron integrals — arc calculated and stored on external storage. Th e second step then con sists of the iterative solution of the Roothaan equations, where the integrals from the first step arc read once for every iteration.

Thus a second method was envisaged, the reaction of a nitrile, hydrogen selenide, and an a-halogenated ketone in the presence of a condensation catalyst, which can be POCla or POCK with a Lewis acid such as PCl3 or anhydrous ZnCL. The use of fresh A1CL leads to the formation of tarry side-products. 

A similar result (open cations) was obtained with carbocations Ar2CH as electrophiles Mayr, H. Pock, R. Chem. Ben, 1986, 119, 2473.
