When atomic energy was moved out of the Ministry of Supply to become an independent organisation, the AEA, it was headed hy a Chairman. The first two were Edwin Plowden and Roger Makins, two of the class of administrators thrown up by the war. They were followed by William Penney.

The article and the ensuing fuss meant that Macmillan had to write to Sir Edwin Plowden, Chairman of the UKAEA, asking him to sort matters out ...
