Platinum complexes sulfur dioxide

Sulfur dioxide and carbon disulfide react with bis(bulky phosphine)platinum complexes to give monomeric trigonal planar [Pt(PR3)2(S02)] and trimeric complexes such as [Pt3(/u-S02)(PR3)2] and [Pt3(/i-CS2)(PR3)2] where R = Cy or But70 71... 

An excellent review entitled Sulfur Dioxide Complexes of the Platinum Metals has recently appeared which, in addition to the subject impUed by the title, addresses the electronic structure of SO2 and its bonding to metal complexes. The present work attempts a more comprehensive review of the structure and bonding of transition metal-SO2 complexes, with particular emphasis on results which have appeared since the previous review. 

Tetravalent plutonium in aq soln is reduced to the trivalent form by sulfur dioxide, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, hydrazine hydrochloride, the uranous ion, the iodide ion by shaking with mercury in chloride soln electrolytically at a platinum cathode. Tetravalent salts are pink or greenish form complexes very readily. 

Platinum(ll) oxide and hydroxide are soluble in aqueous SO2, but not in the other oxoacids imless freshly precipitated. Sulfur dioxide or HSOs reduces PtCU or [PtCU], not to Pt, but to stable, coloriess Pt complexes which do not respond to the usual reagents for Pt and require long boiling with HCl to remove the SO2, although this is still a good route to the red [PtCU] .
