Plasma arc treatment

Recommendation Ideally, the binary precursors methyl-phosphonic difluoride (DF) and ethyl-2-diisopropylamino-ethyl methylphosphonite (QL) stored at Pine Bluff Arsenal should be destroyed directly, either by burning in the Pine Bluff Chemical Destruction Facility incinerator or by plasma arc treatment. If these facilities cannot handle the fluorine-rich DF destruction products, the committee recommends that on-site neutralization followed by oxidative posttreatment of the neutralents be developed. The easiest posttreatment may be shipment to a commercial incinerator capable of dealing with high levels of fluorine (Recommendation 3-2). 

Plasma arc treatment. The spent fuel is placed directly into a plasma centrifugal furnace with depleted uranium and neutron absorbers, where it is melted and converted into a HLW glass waste form. 

Those with a glass or glass ceramic matrix that immobilize the spent fuel can-in-canister, plasma arc treatment, glass material oxidation and dissolution system, and dissolve and vitrify. 

Plasma Arc Treatment - In adhesive and solvent bonding, a method for treating the surfaces of parts prior to solvent and adhesive bonding, in which an electrical current between two electrodes in a gas at low pressure exeites the gas particles, producing free radicals. Contaminants are stripped from the surface of the part, and wettability is increased by reduction of the contact angle. Also ealled plasma discharge, plasma treatment. Residuals Produced The plasma arc process produces ash which may require post treatment to make it suitable for disposal. The wet, scrubber blowdown may require treatment prior to disposal.
