Among natural populations, two major deviations from the ideal pattern are ubiquitous (Pielou, 1977 Lerman, 1979). The first deviation consists of populations with excessive proportions of young units (e.g., planktonic larval stages) because their destruction rate is very high, but chances for survival improve considerably with maturation (type II in Figure 2).
