Piperazine polyurethane

A new ionic polymeric polycarbamate was synthesized after steps of polyurethane chemistry using 3-iso-cyanatemethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate, 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-dihydroperoxyhexane, 1,6-butanediol, 2,4-tolylenediisocyanate, and N,N -bis(j3-Hydroxy-ethyOpiperazine [27]. Modification of the nitrogen of the piperazine ring into quaternary ammonium salt by treatment with methyliodide gave the MPI high electroconductivity.

Many useful methods have been pubHshed for the determination of trace isocyanates in air and in polyurethane products by derivatization and GC, LC, or SEC quantification. For example, industrial hygiene determination of TDI in air by OSHA method 42 is performed by drawing air through a filter impregnated with l-(2-pyridyl)piperazine. Derivatives are formed during sampling, which are then determined by LC. Also of concern are the amine hydrolysis products of the isocyanates. For example, toluenediamine (TDA) may be monitored in furniture foam. This is generally accomplished by liquid-solid extraction or vacuum distillation, followed by GC or LC quantification. 

Polyurethanes with liquid crystalline behaviour have been produced from bischloroformates of 4,4 -alkylenedioxydiphenols by polycondensation with piperazine (37), tr<2 x-2,5-dimethylpiperazine (38) and 4,4 -bipiperidine (39). These molecules exhibit smectic properties. In general the hydrogen bonding between the neighbouring polymer chains is sufficiently strong to suppress the formation of mesophases however, some other systems have been reported. ...
