Physical Properties of Laccases

Laccases are enzymes which catalyze the oxidation of p-diphenols according to the reaction [Pg.13]

Actually they catalyze the oxidation of a variety of oxidizable materials (40—45), however, the Enzyme Commission has chosen to designate these enzymes as diphenol O2 oxidoreductases (EC 1.10.3.2). [Pg.13]

The name laccase was first given to the enzyme by G. Bertrand (46) who studied its activity in crude form from the latex of the lac tree Rhus succedanea, and similar enzymes have been found in the latex of various other Asian lac trees [Pg.13]
