Photodetection

This instrumentation has exquisite sensitivity, which allows the analysis of single cancer cells (Hu et al., 2004). Our earlier work employed slow separation conditions and a rather primitive photodetection system. Our current system takes roughly 1 h to complete the two-dimensional capillary electrophoresis separation and employs state-of-the-art photodetectors. [Pg.358]

The dual-function utility (photon emission in forward bias and photon detection in reverse bias) can be employed to fabricate smart display matrices [148]. By presetting the device in the photodetecting mode (zero or reverse bias), each pixel can sense an optical signal and transfer that signal to the memory in the driving circuit, similar to the process in a photodiode... [Pg.19]

A thin recombination layer is employed between a substrate and a photodetective layer in the imager of JP-A-61067958. The lattice constant of the recombination layer is different from the lattice constant of the substrate and the photodetective layer. To prevent misfit dislocation, the thickness of the recombination layer is chosen to be thinner than a critical value. [Pg.51]

Since the time of Wald s demonstration that rhodopsin, the conceptual chromophore of vision relied upon retinol as a chromogen and Hubbard s contemporary proposal that photodetection involved an isomerism of the chromophore, the conventional wisdom has adopted that position. To support these proposals, Collins proposed that a Shiff-base was... [Pg.2]

The quantum-mechanical approach coupled with a newly discovered electrolytic semiconductor device, the Activa, provide a traceable solution to the photodetection problem and forms the basis of this Chapter as well as the overall work. [Pg.5]

The rapid expansion of the chemical knowledge base during the last fifty years offers an alternate description of the photodetection process in vison. The mechanisms involved in vision are not normally discussed even in upper level college textbooks because of their limited general utility. To completely understand the very sophisticated design of the visual system, relative to man s current knowledge, the serious investigator must look to the specialty literature. Key niches to explore are,... [Pg.7]

The roles of these three niches are explored in this chapter and Chapters 4 8. With their contribution to the knowledge base, the operation of the photodetection process ofvisioncanbe explained without employing any cratches. [Pg.7]

In explaining the photodetection process in vision, there remains the every present problem of clashes in nomenclature as two previously separate fields of chemistry become more entwined. In this case, they are the field of photosensitization chemistry as used in photography and the field of dye chemistry as used in the textile industry. The reader is cautioned to review Section 5.2.4 before proceeding beyond that section. [Pg.7]

Barrier-layer cells and photomultipher tubes have both been used for photodetection in atomic absorption spectroscopy. The use of barrier-layer cells of course is limited by their sensitivity and the diflBculty encountered in amplifying their output. They will suflBce where determination of the alkali elements is desired only. For most other work photomultiplier tubes are necessary. These are available for a broad spectral... [Pg.18]

Figure 3.64. Experimental arrangement for SHG (a) and SFG (b) from an interface. The basic elements are one, resp. two lasers (usually, but not necessarily, pulsed), and a photodetection system. F denotes the filtering system that rejects incident frequency light but passes the second harmonic. In SFG light at frequency (< j -(o ) is emitted at an angle that conserves momentum parallel to the Interface. Figure 3.64. Experimental arrangement for SHG (a) and SFG (b) from an interface.
