Photodegradation of polyethylene waste can be markedly accelerated via its grafting with acrylamide [98], In contrast, photostabilization of polyethylene and polypropylene can be achieved as a result of the grafting of 2-hydroxy-4-(3-methacryloxy-2-hydroxy-propoxy) benzophenone using gamma radiation [ 147], In this case, the grafted compound acting as a U V stabilizer is chemically bound to the backbone chain of the polymer and its evaporation from the surface can be avoided.

Since it is impossible to avoid the presence of impurities in polymers, the protection against photodegradation must rely on additives which are called photostabilizers .

Approximately half of the papers in the book deal with photopolymerization reactions including the role of photoinitiators and photosensitizers. The other half of the papers deal with photodegradation reactions including the use of photostabilizers and photodegradable polymers. 

Since 1971 our department is Involved in study of photodegradation, sensitized photooxidation and photostabilization of polymers. A big effort is made in the study of singlet oxygen oxidation of several important polymers, such as polydienes, poly(vinyl chloride), polystyrene and polyesters, reactions of atomic oxygen and ozone with polydienes and photostabilization of these polymers.
