Photoaligned Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays

The photoalignment technology of azo-dye SDl has been applied to a 0.56 inch LCOS microdisplay panel, which was then assembled on a mixed-mode twisted nematic (MTN) LC configuration for characterization [4]. Both the photoalignment and rubbing methods were used for comparison. 

A high contrast and fast response were demonstrated, which meet microdisplay standards. It was also observed that defects were greatly reduced in photoaligned LCOS microdisplays due to the non-contact nature of the photoaligning technology [4].
