Phosphorus molecular packings

Molecular Packings of the Phosphorus Oxide Sulfides P4OeSn (n = 0—4) in the Solid State... [Pg.369]

A blue-black molecular addition complex of composition (04)2 Cgo is formed on mixing a toluene solution of fullerene, Cgo, with an excess of white phosphorus in CS2 solution. This crystalline complex contains P4 and C o units packed into a simple hexagonal lattice (Figure 4.4). As a result of some kind of free rotation, these units all appear to be effectively spherical as occurs in both white phosphorus and fullerene itself [32],... [Pg.99]

At least 43 of the elements that are composed of individual atoms (as opposed to diatomic gases, molecular elements like sulfur and phosphorus, covalent network elements like carbon, silicon, and germanium) have either hexagonal close-packed or face-centered cubic crystal lattices. How would you rationalize this ... [Pg.776]

Most main group elements build solids that are either infinite arrangements or species of low dimensionality-chains or rings-packed in molecular solids. Exceptions to this behavior are carbon and phosphorus which lead to allotropic forms made up of cluster species. The best known of them is the elementary white phosphorus P4 which has a cluster structure itself and retains its shape in solution and in the gas phase. In the case of carbon a new allotropic form consisting of molecular clusters C, the fullerenes, has been discovered recently. These species are giant carbon cages with spherically shaped structures which lead to molecular solids and that are also stable in solution. [Pg.202]

Other compounds characterized and analyzed by XRD, with other complementary techniques used, include the sterically-crowded triarylphos-phines with formyl and benzoyl groups, benzyl(triphenyl)phosphonium dichloroiodate, the A,A-bis(terphenyl)aminophosphenium cation, dithiophosphinate ligands, and mercury(II) complexes of a-keto stabilized phosphorus ylides. Also, the crystal and molecular structure of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5,7-dimethoxyquinolin-4-yl phenyl bis(2-chloroethyl)phos-phoramidate (32) has been determined by NMR, IR, and XRD analysis. The crystal is triclinic, PI space group, a = 9.5188 A, )= 12.856 A, c= 13.250 A, F= 1412.0 A, and Z = 2 (at 291K). The crystal packing... [Pg.277]
