We wish to report here on the synthesis and biological properties of 0-[m-N,N,N-trimethylammoniophenyl"J 1,3,2-dioxa-phosphorinane 2-oxide iodide (TDPI I, X = TMPH). 

The synthesis of chiral phosphine oxides has stimulated effort in a number of laboratories in recent years. An elegant new approach to the problem involves the use of sugar-derived phosphorus heterocycles.
