Phosphide, Hydrogen, Liquid

Though it has been stated that phosphine is not spontaneously inflammable, with quite small admixtures of liquid hydrogen phosphide it immediately bursts into flame on coming into contact with air. [Pg.31]

Phosphine produced by the reaction of water on calcium phosphide always contains a quantity of the liquid hydrogen phosphide sufficient to make the gas spontaneously inflammable. Use of this property is made in the Holmes Light used at sea as a distress signal, and also as a marker at torpedo practice. [Pg.31]

The most difficult impurity to eliminate is hydrogen, which is nearly always formed simultaneously with the phosphine. G. Ter-Gazarian found the most effective method of purifying the gas from traces of other hydrogen phosphides, and from hydrogen is repeated liquefaction and fractional distillation of the liquid. F. M. G. Johnson recommended alumina, dehydrated at a low temp., as a desiccating agent for the gas. [Pg.804]
