Phosphate Fibers on Trial

From the time of our very first phosphate fiber safety meeting, it was obvious that phosphate fibers and I were on trial. We were to spend more time and money 

In the early days of the Phosphate Fibers Project it was my responsibility to hold the first safety meetings to discuss how we should test phosphates. While we discussed this problem, I served coffee and phosphates in the bakery goods eaten by the group. I made a point of mentioning that they had just eaten some of the substances we were to be testing. 

The skin over the small shard healed with no lump, infection, or other trouble, except that when I would shake hands with someone, pressure on the fragment produced some mild pain. I recorded the incident in my notebook while keeping a record of how long I could continue to feel the fiber in my finger. Within three weeks there was no sign that my finger had been injured. This was the first implant test of a phosphate fiber.
