In recent years it has been shown that the primary event in the Hg-sensltized decomposition of many hydrogen-bearing compounds, in particular paraffins and H2, can be considered the process of H abstraction by the excited Hg. There is evidence that the excited Hg atom forms complexes with alcohols (248), amines (249), and alkanes (250). This has been concluded from fluorescence observation by Phillips and co-workers (248,249), and Gunning and co-workers (250). The transient molecule HgH has been detected spectroscopically in such a system by Vikis and LeRoy (251). The sequence 71 could be of importance in the... [Pg.114]

The hydrocarbons (Phillips research grade) were passed through a dried silica gel column before use. Nitrous oxide (Matheson Co.) was used as received. Solutions were prepared by adding a known amount of nitrous oxide to a degassed sample of alkane. [Pg.486]

Fluorinated molecules have an important role in the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. For some 60 years, anodic oxidation through the Symons and Phillips processes [40], have been used for the manufacture of perfluorinated small molecules such as alkanes and carboxylic acids. While such processes have met with commercial success, the chemistry is difficult to control and always leads to a mixture of products. The two processes also use very unpleasant and corrosive media, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, and a HF/KF... [Pg.84]

Several groups of workers have been occupied with the synthesis of spiro-ketals and polyoxa-polyspiro-alkanes. The hetero Diels-Alder reaction between furanoid or pyranoid exocyclic vinyl ethers and acrolein established the spiro-ketal systems (76) and (77). Oxidative ring-contraction led to 1,6-dioxaspiro-alkane carboxylic acids (Scheme 9), which are useful subunits for polyether antibiotic synthesis. Phillips and his co-workers have tackled the problem using... [Pg.298]

Photo-oxidation has been reported at crude-oil spills. It results in depletion of n-alkanes below nCi5 and alkylaromatics such as Ci- and C2-substituted naphthalenes relative to unoxidized oil (Payne and Phillips, 1985). In terms of a material balance, photo-oxidation has been found to be a minor process (NRC, 1985) but does result in changes in the residual oil composition and can affect the subsequent behavior of an oil spill on the open ocean (Payne and Phillips, 1985). Autooxidation reactions of hydrocarbons in the absence of light have not been well studied. [Pg.454]
