Synthesis pheromones

Stereoselective syntheses of cii-olefins have been widely explored by Bestmann. An example of a pheromone synthesis is given below (H.J. Bestmann, 1976).

Pheromone synthesis was thoroughly reviewed in the past. In 1989, synthetic methods useful in preparing optically active pheromones were reviewed by Mori [1]. More comprehensive reviews are also available [2,3]. The present chapter follows the style adopted in Mori s encyclopedic review [3] to classify the pheromones according to the compound types. Four new or improved methods useful in the synthesis of aliphatic insect pheromones were reported. co-Bromo-l-alkanols are important building blocks in pheromone synthesis. Chong found that a,co-diols gave good yield of co-bromo-l-alkanols when heated with hydrobromic acid and toluene at reflux (Scheme 1) [10]. 

Syntheses of pheromones have been comprehensively treated by Mori [10-14]. The role of synthesis in the research on semiochemicals, the importance of stereochemistry in chemical signalling, and the significant relations between enantiomeric composition and biological activity of chiral semiochemicals have been thoroughly discussed by Mori [15-17].
