Phenytoin neuralgia

Baclofen, labeled as a skeletal muscle relaxant binds to GABA receptors and depresses excitation. It is also useful in the treatment of paroxysms of trigeminal neuralgia. Baclofen is effective in patients with carbamazepine-resistant pain and has been used successfully to relieve attacks in patients previously unresponsive to carbamazepine or phenytoin. 

Phenytoin Adjunct in treatment of tricyclic antidepressant toxicity, muscle relaxant in treatment of muscle hyperirritability, treatment of digoxin-induced arrhythmias and trigeminal neuralgia... 

Gabapentin is the most commonly used antiepilepsy drug in this setting phenytoin (which raises the threshold of nerve cells to electrical stimulation) or sodium valproate are used for resistant neuralgias. 

Uses. Carbamazepine is used for secondary generalised and partial seizures, and primary generalised seizures. Because another antiepilepsy drug (phenytoin) was sometimes beneficial in trigeminal neuralgia, carbamazepine was tried in this condition, for which it is now the drug of choice... 

Other uses. The membrane-stabilising effect of phenytoin has been used in cardiac arrhythmias and, rarely, in cases of resistant pain, e.g. trigeminal neuralgia.

Some cases of trigeminal and related neuralgias appear to respond to phenytoin, but carbamazepine is preferred.
