Solubility soluble in water, insoluble in most organic solvents. 

Preparative Methods obtained by oxidation of 1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate with hydrogen peroxide in glacial acetic acid, followed by continuous extraction with chloroform for 72 h.  

Alternatively, the compound was synthesized by oxidation of 1,10-phenanthroline with a solution of UHP (hydrogen peroxide-urea adduct) in 95% formic acid.  

Handling, Storage, and Precautions Hygroscopic and irritant store under inert atmosphere and use in a fume hood. 

Cyanation. The reaction of l,10-phenanthroline-fV-oxide with potassium cyanide and benzoyl chloride at room temperature furnished 2-cyano-1,10-phenanthroline in good yield (eq 1).
