Phenanthrene-9-carboxylic

Hydrogen and sodium do not react at room temperature, but at 200—350°C sodium hydride is formed (24,25). The reaction with bulk sodium is slow because of the limited surface available for reaction, but dispersions in hydrocarbons and high surface sodium react more rapidly (7). For the latter, reaction is further accelerated by surface-active agents such as sodium anthracene-9-carboxylate and sodium phenanthrene-9-carboxylate (26—28). 

Pschorr s synthesis of phenanthrene (1893) in five steps with the essential dediazoniation and ring closure of 2-diazonio-a-phenylcinnamic acid giving, on addition of copper powder, phenanthrene-9-carboxylic acid, is today still the highest yielding one of all the reactions discussed in this section, Pschorr was able to get 93% yield, and today electrochemically induced Pschorr and related reactions141 give almost quantitative yields in several cases. 

Stirring a solution of phenylselenoxide 22 in dichloromethane/pyridine at room temperature led to decomposition and only low yields of 9-trichloromethylphenanthrene were obtained. In the presence of methanol, however, methyl phenanthrene-9-carboxylate (24) was obtained in 65% yield, indicating that the dichlorocycloproparene 23 had been initially formed. ...
