Pharmacophore discovery future

This is an appropriate stage in the development of pharmacophore discovery to look back and summarize what we have learned about what works, what does not work, and where the areas for future work lie.

The pharmacophore is a useful concept, which has assisted in the discovery of many biologically active compounds. It will no doubt be forced to compete with other, even more useful, concepts in the future. This will force its development and elaboration, but it will stand or fall on its own merits. Such concepts are no longer limited by availability of computer power and the road is open to even more imaginative solutions to long-standing problems in medicine.
